The Conference Volunteer Opportunities
Thank you for your interest in serving on a Conference committee. Below you will find a list of committee descriptions detailing volunteer opportunities. Please contact The Conference staff if you have any additional questions.
Board of Directors
The Board of Directors is the policy-making body for The Conference. Its members represent the various funeral service regulatory boards throughout the United States and Canada. The Board of Directors consists of nine individuals representing the following districts:
Elections for open positions of The Conference Board of Directors are conducted each year during the Annual Meeting in accordance to the by-laws. The Board of Directors meets twice per year with travel expenses paid by The Conference. Periodic conference calls are conducted as well.
*Nominees must be a member of a Member Board or Member Board Staff at the time of nomination, election, and throughout the entire term of the elected period. See Conference by-laws for more information.
Examination Committee
Every year The Conference Board of Directors appoints members of the National Board Exam Arts and Sciences Committees to serve a one-year, voluntary appointment. Committee members are dually licensed practitioners from across the country who are responsible for maintaining the National Board Exam. These subject-matter experts provide general oversight of the licensing examination with an ongoing mission to maintain and review items at various stages of the exam development process. The Exam Committee typically meets twice per year and, while this is a voluntary position, travel expenses are paid by The Conference. The composition of the Examination Committee is represented by various geographic regions, work experience in the field, gender and race. Previous experience in exam development is not required, as training is provided. Committee members cannot work directly with any ABFSE accredited program and must also be willing to sign a confidentiality agreement.
Item Writers
Item Writers are sought for their knowledge in the areas of funeral directing and embalming. Volunteers must be licensed professionals in the field, passed the National Board Exam (NBE), and must be able to receive and transfer information electronically. The Conference typically conducts one or two item writing workshops per year with travel expenses paid by The Conference. Previous experience is not required, as training is provided. Educators who work directly with an ABFSE accredited program are welcome to apply. Item Writers must be willing to sign a confidentiality agreement.
Model Document Committee
Periodically, The Conference solicits volunteers to participate in the construction, review, and maintenance of The Conference Model Documents. These documents serve as a guideline to regulatory officials, legislatures, and members of the profession seeking to adopt or amend the laws pertaining to funeral service. The overall goal of the model documents is to increase licensure portability through uniformity and consistency while promoting standardization of terminology and regulation. Regulatory experience is typically preferred. The Model Document Committees meet periodically via conference call and, on occasion, in person with travel expenses paid by The Conference.
Please check back periodically for volunteer opportunities.
We’ve put together a helpful guide to help you find the exam that’s right for you.
